"The Debt"

I don't write many double-drabbles, but this bunny just came nibbling and demanded attention.

Title: The Debt
Author: Shirebound
Word Count: 200
Genre: FP
Source text: ROTK book-canon
Rating: G
Summary: Someone ponders the road not taken

It was my place – not his – to take the Ring to Mordor. My ancestor, Lúthien, descended to the very depths of Angband and charmed Morgoth into sleep. She and Beren cut the Silmaril from his crown. Their blood is my blood. Could I not have dared the same as they? Are my love and courage any less? Morgoth was gone, but Sauron remained; yet his power was diminished, poured into the Ring. Surely, bearing it, I could have overborne him as Lúthien did to Morgoth, and seen the Ring to its destruction.

But before I realized that it was I who should have stood forth at the Council and claimed this task, Frodo was gone -- fled into the Dark Lands with no power to prevail save the resilience of his race, and the love of a servant. And so he paid the terrible price that should have been mine.

He took my place, although my beloved does not agree. And so I now offer my place in return; it is all I have to give, in poor payment of my debt.

“But in my stead you shall go, Ring-bearer, when the time comes, and if you then desire it.”

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, this is BRILLIANCE, utter BRILLIANCE, sweetie.

Not an interpretation I've seen, but one I absolutely love.

This is utterly exquisite, and it just left me teary and open-mouthed. Lovely!!!! :D Such POWER behind it.

I love your fluff, but this is really the kind of thing that floats my boat, so I'm glad the bunny bit and wouldn't let you go. ;D

Love and snugs,
Febobe :)

What a fascinating look inside Arwen's mind and the reason she offered Frodo her place. It must have been difficult, being considered the image of Luthien come to life again, and knowing all that she braved and accomplished. But could Arwen have destroyed the Ring after overthrowing Sauron? Really thought-provoking 200 words, Janet!

Ooh, nice twist at the end - I thought it was Aragorn until then! But of course Arwen makes much more sense.

He took my place... so I now offer my place in return
What a great perspective - that Arwen imagines she failed in her responsibility, and must now make amends. It gives me new respect for her.

*is floored* OMG, Shirebound, this is utterly amazing. *mouth hangs open* I never never never thought about it this way (manyily because I hardly ever think of anyone else than Frodo and Sam... *blushes*) but oh wow. This makes so very very very much sense and would give her gift a more personal motive than just doing something for the Ringbearer.

Wonderful! I'm totally amazed. What a brilliant idea and thought-provoking drouble! *hugs you tightly*
